Many people think of vineyards as being natural, but vines don’t naturally grow in neat and tidy rows, rather in the wild they clamber chaotically over bushes and trees. Likewise, vineyards weren’t created by a divine being, rather each of them was planted by particular people, at a particular time and for a particular reason. At Gut Hermannsberg we are in the unusual position of knowing that most of our vineyards were first planted during the years immediately after 1902 when our core sites - Hermannsberg, Kupfergrube and Steinberg – were carved out of hillsides previously covered in scrub, stunted oaks and rocks. The Prussian state was responsible for this engineering feat on a scale comparable with the construction of the Eifel Tower, and the precise records of our Prussian founders are stored in our archive.
