Prädikatswein / Qualitätswein mit Prädikat / QmP

(See also: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese / BA, Trockenbeerenauslese / TBA, Eiswein / Ice Wine)

These are the traditional style German wines with more or less grape sweetness and the hierarchical series of the Qualitätswein mit Prädikat (QmP)  designations starting with Kabinett (the lightest in body and the only off-dry) and ending in Trockenbeerenauselse (TBA) (the most unctuous and honey-sweet) is called the Prädikatsystem. The law uses the sugar content of the grape juice to determine which Prädikat a wine is eligible for. Today at Gut Hermannsberg and most of Germany’s other leading producers are focused on dry wines that are all marketed under the legal designation Qualitätswein (QbA), which is traditionally regarded as a step below Prädikatswein. However, in terms of wine quality Germany took a couple of big steps up with the emphasis switching from grape sugar content to where the wine originated, in line with the traditional French model.
