Although wine can be made from all manner of fruits (if you add sugar also from flowers, herbs, roots) usually it is made from wine grapes, that is the fruit of the Vitis Vinifera vine. There are an estimated 10,000 varieties of wine grapes and their diversity of appearance, aroma and flavor is astonishing. Nobody is quite sure where A total of 7.5 million hectares are devoted to growing them (also for table fruit, raisins, juice and juice concentrate) right around the world, the grape vine now also flourishing in tropical regions and semi-deserts as well as in more temperate regions of the world such as Gut Hermannsberg in the Nahe region of Germany.
