Dry
(See also: Medium-Dry / Feinherb / Demi-Sec, Sweet)
These English, French and German words all mean the same thing: wines that have no perceptible grape sweetness remaining after the completion of alcoholic fermentation. However, the threshold of perception for sweetness varies a lot from person to person. A normal person cannot detect grape sweetness at less than 4 grams/liter (bone dry) but some so-called “super-tasters” can. Whether you prefer wines that are bone dry, feinherb / medium-dry / demi-sec, or frankly sweet is a matter of personal taste. Our preferences are shaped by early life experiences no less than habit and they have nothing to do with the sophistication of your wine knowledge although this often claimed to be the case.
