Canopy Management
Many wine drinkers imagine that the only hard work in the vineyards is the pruning of the vines and the picking of the grapes, but this is far from the truth.
At Gut Hermannsberg, just as at all the world’s other leading wineries, during the summer our team is very busy with canopy management. This means the training of the vine’s growing shoots between wires suspended from the poles at each end of the row. The shoots would grow way too long if we didn’t cut the tips off and the vines’ growth would be too dense if we didn’t thin the shoots our, increasing the risk of mildew.
Not only can it adversely affect the quality of the wine, it could even destroy the entire crop if not treated.
