Bastei
(See also: GG, Porphyry, Ryolite, Terroir, VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”, Volcanic, 7 Terroirs)
Lying at the foot of the Rotenfels cliffs, an over 200 meter high mass of volcanic rhyolite, the tiny Bastei most spectacular and the warmest of GutHermannsberg’s 7 Terroirs or VDP Grosse Lage / “Grand Cru” vineyard sites. The wines are ripe and rich (often with an apricot note), but by picking relatively early we avoid any hint of opulence. Although we are the largest owners in this site we only produce a few bottles of one wine from this site, the Bastei GG / Grand Cru. It is bottled and released after two years aging in oak and stainless steel casks, but a few more years of aging in the bottle always do him good.
