Auslese
(see also: Prädikatswein)
Traditional German designation for nobly sweet wines, generally from the Riesling grape, made from overripe grapes and/or those with noble rot that were manually selected. Top quality Auslese are rich and intense, but also vibrant and elegant. They are always less unctuous and sweet than Beerenauslese / BA or Trockenbeerenauslese / TBA, both true dessert wines produced from more shriveled grapes). The term entered general usage after the 1811 vintage, the first from which such wines were widely produced in Germany.
At Gut Hermannsberg our focus is firmly on dry wines and we only produce these wines in years when there are a good quantity of suitable grapes. The last such year was 2015.
