Kupfergrube Riesling Sekt 2013

When, on the 22nd September 2019, the traditional auction takes place in the Nahe another unique wine from Gut Hermannsberg will come under the hammer.

With the 2015 TBA that received 100 points no less than with an historic Riesling – the last bottle from 1921 – the estate set new records both the last two years. These two wines came from the VDP Grosse Lage/”Grand Cru” Kupfergrube vineyard site. Now an amazing, hand-made and limited-edition sparkling Sekt comes from the same vineyard.

In 2013, when Gut Hermannsberg had just been named “Rising Star of the Year” by the Gault Millau wine guide, winemaker Karsten Peter  began a daring new project: a single- vineyard sparkling wine.

The situation was optimal: Peter had already cultivated the Gut Hermannsberg vineyards for four years and converted them from conventional to sustainable cultivation. The height of the vines’ canopy was increased and the yields reduced: changes that could both be seen and tasted. From year to year the wines became more concentrated and complex, more individual and original.  In particular, the Kupfergrube – the steep southwest-facing slope that not only gives the estate’s best wines, but also give’s the estate it’s signature color – had undergone an unbelievable transformation in quality.

Then the 2013 vintage was an optimum Sekt year thanks to the relatively cool season that lead to slow ripening. As Peter harvested the Riesling grapes for the Sekt in September – long before the grapes for the still wines were picked – they showed great fruit aromas and freshness, but only modest sugar content. That’s exactly what you need if you want to make a great sparkling wine with a long life ahead of it.
