Vom Vulkan
(See also: Kupfergrube, VDP Ortswein / Village Wine, Volcanic)
On paper the Vom Vulkan (from the volcano, in English) from Gut Hermannsberg is a VDP Ortswein / Village Wine the official name of which is “Schlossböckelheimer Riesling trocken”. In fact, it’s actually always a single-vineyard wine from the estate’s Kupfergrube site, the most famous of the estate’s 7 terroirs or VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”. It is warm and ripe, but with great structure, smoky character and a salty minerality the long aftertaste very clean. From 12 to 30+ year old vineyards it has underplayed power and can age for more than a decade if properly cellared.
