Volcanic
(See also: Melaphry, Porphyry, Rhyolite, Vom Vulkan)
In Germany, no less than France or Spain and Portugal, vineyards with volcanic soils are rare. Only in Sicily and Campania in Southern Italy are these soil types rather common for vineyards. That makes Gut Hermannsberg a serious exception to the rules, since 6 of the estate’s7 terroirs have rocky volcanic soils. And from our famous terrace you look up at the vineyards of the Kupfergrub VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”, so we are truly Under the Volcano!
