VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”
(See also: Grand Cru,VDP / Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, VDP Gutswein / Estate Wine, VDP Ortswein / Village Wine)
The top level of the vineyard classification of the elite VDP wine producers’ association and the Grosse Lagen vineyards are the only ones from which the highly sought-after dry GG wines can be produced. Gut Hermannsberg’s 30 hectares of vineyards are all situated in sites classified Grosse Lage by the VDP. They are the German equivalents to the famous and extremely expensive Grand Crus of Burgundy in France. However, prices for the GGs from Gut Hermannsberg are a fraction of what the top Grand Cru in Burgundy cost. Beneath GG comes the VDP Otswein / Village Wine category, then the entry-level VDP Gutswein / Estate Wine category.
