Rotenberg
( See also: Grand Cru, Porphyry, Rhyolite, Terroir, VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”, Volcanic, 7 Terroirs)
For many in the Gut Hermannsberg team the Rotenberg is our most underrated site and the source of one of the estate’s most exciting wines. When you stand at the top of this site on a windy day, then it feels like you’ve reached the end of Germany, or possibly the world! The powerful but racy Rotenberg GG has an intensely smoky character that electrifies many of our fans. This is the highest altitude (up to 350 meters above sea level) and steepest (up to 70% grade) of the estate’s 7 Terroirs, or VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”. Recently a major commitment was made to this site with the planting of another hectare / 2.5 acres of vines to bring our total holding to 4 hectares / almost 10 acres.
