GG / Grosses Gewächs

(See also: Grand Cru, Terroir, VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”, 7 Terroirs)

This “Grand Cru” category of single vineyard dry German wines was introduced by the VDP elite producers association with the 2002 vintage, but a group of leading producers had already been working seriously on this project for a decade at that point and a few pioneers had privately introduced “Grand Cru” type vineyard designations back in the late 1980s. A GG – the abbreviation is used in Germany, no less elsewhere right than around Planet Wine– is always a dry wine and comes 100% from the single vineyard named on the label. They are always varietal wines and each region has it’s own list of varietals that are allowed. Gut Hermannsberg produces 6 different GGs, all of which are dry Rieslings, because Riesling is the grape variety that best expresses our terroir
